E’ la notte fra il 24 e il 25 agosto 1944, gli alleati entrano a Parigi. Poco prima dell’alba, il generale tedesco Dietrich von Choltitz, governatore militare di Parigi, si prepara ad eseguire gli ordini di Adolph Hitler, distruggere la capitale francese. Ponti e monumenti sono tutti stati minati e sono pronti ad esplodere ma entra in scena Raoul Nordling, console svedese, che si intrufola nello studio del generale per cercare di dissuaderlo dal confermare quell’ordine fatale.
