“Africa Rising” follows the arc from the euphoria of Africa’s young pop culture during the independence era, through the leaden years of the Cold War and the end of apartheid, all the way to the present-day renaissance. In doing so, the film focuses particularly on the artists and styles that have also reverberated in Europe and the United States: Miriam Makeba, Papa Wemba, Manu Dibango, Fela Kuti or today’s Wizkid – international stars from Africa.
