Smilla Jasperson is an Inuit woman born in Greenland who moved to Copenhagen. When Isaiah, a six-year-old boy, is found dead face down in the snow after falling from the roof of his house, the police rule the case a tragic accident. The son of a chronic alcoholic, the boy was Smilla's inseparable friend, and unconvinced by the police's conclusions, she begins to investigate.
