Il 1° agosto 2015, ai piedi di una delle torri più lussuose di Tokyo, dove si è accalcata tutta la stampa giapponese, Mark Karpelès esce di casa scortato della polizia. Il suo volto è nascosto da un berretto ed indossa una maglietta scelta con cura: “Effortless French”. Poche ore dopo, lo sviluppatore francese viene incriminato e imprigionato per falsificazione di dati informatici e appropriazione indebita nell’ambito dell’inchiesta sulla scomparsa nel febbraio 2014 di 850.000 Bitcoin, l’equivalente di mezzo miliardo di dollari. Il giovane dirigeva allora MTGox, la società responsabile di questo disastro finanziario e la più grande piattaforma di scambio della moneta virtuale, gestendo l’80% delle transazioni globali. Per un anno è rimasto in custodia cautelare, finché la giustizia giapponese ha deciso di rilasciarlo per mancanza di prove. Mark è finalmente libero di provare la sua innocenza.
